This week’s security tip is to be the last one to enter your personal vehicle – specifically as the driver.
When you are the driver you carry a certain level of responsibility for your passengers. Whether these are children, siblings, friends, or coworkers they are placing themselves in your care.
By getting in the car last you can achieve 3 things:
- You can make sure everyone safely enters the vehicle. This is especially important for young children or friends and family members with special needs.
- You can practice your situational awareness by scanning your surroundings for items left behind, obstacles near the car, or potential criminal threats. By using good situational awareness you can also make yourself a hardened target.
- You show respect and care for those in you charge. Don’t just stand at your own door and wait. Take this time to open the door for others, put items in the trunk, and be available to assist your passengers.
As I’ve said before, personal security is not just about keeping yourself safe. It is also about caring for those around you and reducing the stress and challenges that daily life brings.
Bonus tip: If the weather is particularly hot or cold, make sure you still start the car before your passengers start getting in!
