Personal security is important because you and the people you care for are important. And because life is hazardous. Too often we think “that’ll never happen to me” or “I live in a safe, comfortable neighborhood”. But the fact is, we will all eventually face danger in our life and we need to be prepared and equipped.
We see every year in the news how severe storms can cause major power outages affecting the lives of hundreds and thousands of people. A major pipeline supplying gas to the northeast US was taken offline just a few years ago. Floods from hurricanes, increased active shooter situations, and large scale violence taking place in cities around the world all point to an increasingly unpredictable future. We could sit and pass blame, arguing what is right or wrong, but we can’t deny that these types of events threaten our wellbeing and security – some more disastrously than others. It’s time to take more proactive action.
We are able to take steps now to make sure that when danger or crisis comes our way, we are ready. This is the most important part of personal security. Staying ahead of the problem. Recognizing the threat before it occurs. Our first priority should be to eliminate the risk before it becomes a problem. Or, if it is unavoidable, to minimize the impact. We can do this by building our skills, knowledge, and experience ahead of time.
